National Cancer Institute (NCI) awards the Dana Farber Cancer Institute's PLGA Research Program $7.5 million

A TIMELY SUCCESS FOR CHILDREN'S BRAIN TUMOR RESEARCH...as primary cancers of the central nervous system have now surpassed leukemia as the leading cause of cancer-related death in children.

The Dana Farber Cancer Institute's recent grant application to the NCI entitled "Therapeutic Opportunities for Pediatric Low Grade Astrocytoma" was approved for funding in March 2011.  This grant will provide $7.5 million over the next 5 years to further the DFCI's PLGA Research Program's long-term goal of improving the standard of care for pediatric astrocytomas - the most common brain cancers in children. Towards this end, we will improve our understanding of astrocytoma biology and develop new diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic tools for these tumors.

This unprecedented move for the NCI marks a milestone in government funded pediatric low grade astrocytoma/glioma research initiatives.  In addition, it also reinforces the enormous results which are possible through public/private partnerships.   Prior to applying to the NCI for grant funding, the DFCI's program was privately funded (through donations raised by the PLGA Foundation and other like-minded foundations/individuals).  Based on the successful outcomes, the NCI was able to support the next phase of this program which will surely give researchers better direction in finding more effective treatments and a cure for PLGA.  This model of public/private partnership is one which the PLGA Foundation seeks to replicate moving forward.
