A recent article in last Sunday's New York Times, "Grant System Leads Cancer Researchers to Play It Safe" criticized the NCI grant system, which, quoting the Times article "has become a sort of jobs program, a way to keep research laboratories going year after year with the understanding that the focus will be on small projects unlikely to take significant steps toward curing cancer."

The NCI musta know it was coming...today, the new NCI bulletin came out. And interestingly, they have their own view of the grant process. And actually, to me, they make some very good points. Here's a a link to the article, titled "Putting Some Perspective on Research and Risk". Let's just keep our fingers crossed its not all corporate speak.....
