Here is a starting idea...

OK, the idea here is for us to figure out what to do for NCCAM 2009. By then we will be 10,000 STRONG! Or more.

#1 - True to our mission statement, the corporations that we are collecting info on in the NCCAM 2009 Group will be approached with the idea of promoting AWARENESS. The message obviously needs to be better defined; materials prepared, etc., but it will NOT be a fundraising effort on behalf of any single organization. Please, let’s not just shout out ideas. Do the research, think it through, connect the dots, then post your info with links, rationale, and a suggested tie in between childhood cancer and the companies.

#2 - The second part of planning for next September will be a media campaign. We will be looking to identify all major news outlets, establish contact and discuss this story with then as soon as possible. This will not be another “Letter to the Editor” attempt. We will find the right person, gain his or her support, and be ready when the time comes.

This September the Nashville Parent Magazine will be highlighting childhood cancer. It will be a multipage, multi-faceted piece. I will be writing some of it. All it took to get this going was an email to the publisher which I found on the contents page of the magazine. I encourage everyone who has such a publication in their area to contact the publisher and very briefly share their story. I have added a copy of my email to the end of the post, if you would like to copy it please feel free.

"As of last year September is being recognized as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, September 13th is Childhood Cancer Awareness Day. To help bring awareness to children who fight cancer I am asking that you focus the September issue to childhood cancer, the affects it has on the family, the lifelong struggles that children who survive cancer face (that adults typically don’t face), the places that treat children with cancer, the nurses and doctors who take care of them, and most importantly the children who fight or have fought cancer.

I can provide you with a list of children who have fought or are fighting cancer. They have some pretty amazing stories. I would love to share with you my daughter’s story as well. I would love to help other families who will go through cancer with their child one day who don’t know what they will be facing yet. This subject is often overlooked because people can’t handle the fact that children die every day from cancer.

I will gladly help come up with ideas or even write an article myself. I have all kinds of statistics I could share with you as well. Please seriously consider making Childhood Cancer the focus of the September issue this year for the 12,500 child who are diagnosed every year with cancer."

I emailed Guideposts Magazine Emily's story and about Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. I told them about the different celebrities that are associated with childhood cancer like Cindy Crawford and Pres. Bush. It would be great if they would tribute next Sept.'s magazine to childhood cancer. Maybe if everyone sent them(and other magazines) their child's story, we could get them to help us raise awareness.

I have a local Kroger that is interested in putting out some gold ribbon items next year. Any idea where I can direct them to get stuff? I know cafepress but I am looking more for gold ribbon balloons and such.

In case you haven't heard, this week is "Cupcakes For A Cause" week (Oct. 20-26). Go online to www.cupcakesforacause.com to find a participating bakery in your area. A portion of cupcake sales will be donated to CancerCare for Kids. If there isn't a bakery near you, send an online cupcake and $1.00 will be donated to CancerCare for Kids (up to $10,000).

Let's take it one step further...if there isn't a participating bakery near you, find one and ask them to sign up!

I think we should contact them and see if they would be interested in changing their cupcake week to a week in September, since that is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. However, they've been doing this since 2004, so they may not be willing to change. Doesn't hurt to ask, right? I've already called and left a message. Let's flood them with calls so they see how serious we are about this! The number for CancerCare is 212-712-8400.

Has anyone mentioned thanking the companies who have already contributed this year. Maybe we should all take the time to at least email people like Chili's so they know how much it touches all of us what they've done. Chili's also have a list of vendor partners that helped with the campaign that could use a thank you as well.

Anyone have a list of companies that did something....anything for NCCAM 2008? If we all take the time to thank them, they would be more willing to help and even increase their campaigns for next year.

Just a thought!!

Blessings and happy days,
Amy

I think that we should do a coordinated attack;

Pick a company like Walmart and begin grass root inquires throughout the USA. No longer than a week after our local store 'D-Day' one of us visits the Corporate Office. The idea is to saturate Corporate with inquires from numerous stores and then a representative shows up and guides corporate.

I think this would be a good first step. Once we get one of the big chain stores to sign up we can start going after distributors.
