Ian is a middle child. He has a sister who is 5 yrs older and a brother that is 3 1/2 yrs younger. He was diagnosed with stage 3, favorable histology Wilms Tumor in July 2005 (little brother was 2 1/2 wks old!). Surgery removed his left kidney, tumor, some lymph nodes, a portion of the renal vein and some back muscle. He successfully completed 6 rounds of radiation and 6 months of chemotherapy. Today he is a very typical 6 yr old boy. He enjoys sports, music, art, and harassing his sister and brother.

I am a Team Leader for CureSearch for the state of Oklahoma.

I am a senior political science major. Once out of school I wish to work in public policy and try to help our kids. I am an avid scrapbooker and reader as well.

Update on the goings on around here

Posted on March 30, 2009 at 7:35pm 0 Comments

Well, as you can see by my picture, Ian shaved his hair for St Baldricks Day. This year marked the 3rd time he has done this. He LOVES it and it has become his unofficial kick off to summer.

Most recently, Ian had his very first Tae Kwon Do belt test. He passed with flying colors and is now a yellow belt!

Ian and I are headed to Reach The Day in June. We went, for the first time, last year and had a blast. Ian's goal for this year is to visit Ford's Theater. He is quite… Continue

Ian turns 7 tomorrow! Please stop by his page and wish him a Happy Bithday. While you're there prayers for clear scans on January 6 would be great too. :)

On January 18 he will be 3 years off treatment.

Welcome to our busy month.

Worry and Fear

Don't you hate it when you know something is up and yet you can't put your finger on what it is? I am there RIGHT NOW. For the past 2 days Ian I have found redish spots on his underwear. The first spot I just happened to see because his underwear was on top of the laundry basket. The second spot I saw because I asked to see his underwear last night.

A trip to the pediatricians yesterday and a urine test said there was no blood in his urine!?!? Then what the heck is it. No scratches… Continue

Is my kid the only one?

Posted on August 12, 2008 at 7:30pm 9 Comments

I am on a quest, of sorts. Is Ian the only cancer kid that has food allergies? He is HIGHLY allergic to milk (all the proteins found in cow's milk and peanuts). So far we have not found another. Thankfully this did not cause any problems with treatment.

My ramblings on raising a kid that had cancer....

I don't know about the other parents, but for me this has been challenging. When they are sick you baby them, coddle them and occasionally let them get away with things a "normal" child would never get away with (as in eating McDonald's twice a day for a week). Then you are told they are well. Scans are N.E.D. and to move on with life. How do you do this? You have, quite often, other kids too. Your whole family has changed . The other kids readjust easily, but the one that was sick doesn't.… Continue

Hey Carrie:
I just read in the news blog on this site that Rep. Tom Cole is part of the Congressman Sestak's Pediatric Cancer Caucus, asking for $30 million in funding for the CPWCCCA bill in the Presidential Budget for Fiscal Year 2011 and the remaining years this act is authorized for..... Woohoo!

Hi Carrie:
Still trying to contact geo groups on the iniative posted on the front page. Rep. Tom Cole, OK, Sen. Mary Landrieu LA, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson TX and Rep. Rodney Alexander, LA need phone calls. Can you help to get the word out to your geo group members about this? I know you are doing a lot on fb, too, thanks!

Hi Carrie:
Hope you all are doing well. Hey, could you please contact Tom Cole who is on the Labor HHHS committee? You can do it on the Team Unite site on the top of the main page or the CureSearch link posted today. Could you ask other constituents of OK to do it, too? Also, Rodney Alexander of LA is on the list of people to contact, if anyone in your South Central geo group lives in Louisiana. Thank you!

Hi Carrie:
Drew is ok. Still in remission for which we are so thankful for. He went to KC to have his leg lengthened ( he has a metal rod implant in one of his legs because of the bone cancer that he had) and well, the surgeon did too much. We usually only get half an inch at a time and this time it was an inch. So, he has missed three weeks of high school so far and might miss at least another one. Besides going through considerable pain, he is behind in school now, but we are hoping that he can catch up soon and return on crutches to school. So, yeah, he is doing ok. He is amazing, still so funny and upbeat.

I am trying to help out with the corporate sponsorships for our CureSearch walk in June but it is going slow... I hope that we do as well as last year but the economy is affecting everything.

I hope that Ian is doing well. I'll check your cb. By the way, my second son's middle name is Ian. I have always loved the name.

It was great to meet you too. I hope to see you again at another CureSearch event. (We are going to get out to DC in June, but it might be too big of a stretch).
