DKMS began in Germany with the mission of one man, Peter Harf.
In 1990, he was desperate to find a donor for his wife Mechtild, who had acute leukemia. He and his family fought to save her life by inspiring people to register as bone marrow donors, but sadly, she lost her battle. After her death, he continued fighting in her honor, so that one day all patients in need of a bone marrow transplant would have a fair chance of finding their life-saver.
DKMS or "Deutsche Knochenmarkspenderdatei" (German Bone Marrow Donor Center in English) was officially founded in 1991 by Peter Harf and his wife's physician, Professor Gerhard Ehninger. Their goal was simple: to build the world's largest donor center to help more patients in need. In just 5 years, DKMS become the largest bone marrow donor center in the world, and still holds this distinction today with more than 1.7 million registered donors. Since its inception, DKMS has facilitated more than 15,000 transplants worldwide, and we are not stopping there.
DKMS expanded into America to make it simpler for U.S. patients to gain access to DKMS registered donors. Through this effort, DKMS Americas has been able to establish a donor recruitment program and national campaigns throughout the U.S. to raise awareness and increase the diversity of its donor registry.
DKMS offers patients and their families access to the largest bone marrow donor database in the world. We are a resource for blood cancer patients in need of a bone marrow transplant.
* Note: DKMS Americas is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in the United States; incorporated in Washington D.C. in June 2004. DKMS Americas is an independent legal entity that works closely with DKMS.
