The Swine Flu: A Crisis

Posted on April 30, 2009 at 11:58pm 8 Comments

It's all over the news. The Swine Flu has entered the U.S., and everyone is responding quickly. Here is what has happened already:

--Over 100 schools have closed.

--President Obama called on all schools with possible swine flu cases to "strongly consider temporarily closing."

--Congress approved $1.5 billion in emergency funds.

--Education Secretary Arne Duncan said that everyone involved in schools needs to "pitch in and do our part to prevent the… Continue

HUMANA HEALTH: THE POWER OVER LIFE

Posted on April 4, 2009 at 10:49pm 4 Comments

The strength and determination of these young people fighting cancer is on a level that I could never have imagined. I have watched these kids, including my own son, stare directly into the flames of Hell .

The most agonizing aspect of cancer is that most of the battle is fought alone. We are beside our children, but we can not take on their cancer. However there are times when the fight goes beyond cancer. It is at those times that the responsibility falls squarely on everyone of… Continue

9 year old Mason Woods fought cancer with my son Tyler up on the J-5 cancer floor of Children's Hospital. They went into remission around the same time. About three weeks ago, Mason's cancer relapsed with a vengeance. He passed away only one week later. His funeral was last week, and his family now struggles to proceed with live without Mason.

This past week, Mason's dad went into his office. As he sat down, he discovered the picture… Continue

WHY?

Posted on February 14, 2009 at 11:28pm 3 Comments

We are just kids. We are supposed to get to have fun and be able to go to school and spend time having lots of fun and worry our mom's when we are late coming home, to have our first kiss, to grow up and have kids that our parents can spoil. Not to be sick everyday. Not to be fighting cancer. Not be told sorry we can't do anything else for you. Not to be afraid.

--Our friend Sinjin Andrukates, 15, fighting relapsed Burkitt's Lymphoma-Leukemia

The inevitable question that comes… Continue

EPA to test air, water in town fearing cancer

By Associated Press: 12:02 p.m. EST, Dec 17, 2008

CLYDE, OHIO: State officials say they will begin monitoring air and water in a northern Ohio town where there are a surprisingly high number of children with cancer.

At least 18 children in the Sandusky County town of Clyde have been diagnosed with cancer in recent years.

Ohio Environmental Protection Agency director Chris Korleski says he's making this his top… Continue

Kyle,

Lovely to read that your son is engaged to be married. It's another rite of passage in a parents life. And hopefully a step closer to grandchildren, which is where the real fun begins.!! Keep running.

Hi Kyle:
I was over on your blog page and read "Never Stop Fighting." I have a teen who was diagnosed when he was 12 and has been in remission almost 3 years. He turns 15 today and will be getting his driving permit soon.. I think about those things in your post, things that I take for granted with my other two teens. Teens just want to fit in and be like everyone else. We are friends of Sinjin's too. My son doesn't talk much about all this but I appreciate how Sinjin does. It gives me a window into the teen world and how this experience might affect him.

Kyle,
Congrats on your race. I have reading updates and understanding how well you and your family are doing. I find your writing very expressive and nicely done. Both you and my favorite brother in law have that in common in addition to lovin your boys.

Take care.
