Kendall's battle ended at 10:25pm on Sunday, July 31, 2011. I miss him so much.

I just wanted to post an update about Kendall. He's doing well. He's a happy little boy and although he'd rather be home, he still enjoys himself in the hospital during his stays. He spent Thanksgiving there on contact and neutropenic precautions, but since this is a toy-less and candy-less holiday, he was less traumatized than you might think. The nurses are letting him leave his room even though he is testing positive for the C-Diff antigen. He wears a hat, long sleeves and long pants with… Continue

We all have sweet memories of childhood, most of us anyway. Why is that? I think that it's because everything is more as a child than as an adult. When a child feels joy, it fills them up; it's the only emotion they feel, so pure. But, being a child is tough, even under the best of circumstances. It's also true that when a child feels pain, it also is the only thing they feel. Embarrassment, frustration, loneliness, and oh yes, fear. All of these things are overwhelmingly pure emotions,… Continue

There are many new members so I wanted to post a reminder that this coming Monday, September 27th, all Chili's restaurants in the country will be donating 100% of their profits for the entire day to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. It's an easy way to help support and raise awareness for childhood cancers and other catastrophic childhood diseases. So, if you have no plans that day or just want to grab something to go, try Chili's and color a pepper for a special child.

As you all know, September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. All during the month you can donate to St. Jude Hospital, the national hub of pediatric cancer research, by eating at Chili's restaurants. September 27th, all day long, is "Donate All Profits Day", when all Chili's in the country donate 100% of their profits to St. Jude. Mark your calenders and spread the word!

I know that this isn't the place to keep a journal of the kids' progress, but after re-reading my last blog, I just can't leave it at that. Just days later another tumor was found, Kendall was admitted to Children's Hospital here in New Orleans, and after surgery to reinstall a port, (after two years without one), he began chemotherapy today. We don't yet know what we're dealing with or what's going to happen next, but as soon as his caringbridge page gets updated, I will post it so anyone who… Continue

I just wanted to write a quick note for all of those who generously took the time to read my previous post. Kendall's bone marrow and cerebrospinal fluid are showing 100% donor cells. That means no chemo! It looks like they'll be able to take care of this tumor with local radiation and surgery. However, Kendall's doctors tell us that it is certain that the sleeping beast will awaken, that his relapse is coming soon. His parents are discussing a couple of options with clinical trials, with the… Continue

I'm writing this for anyone who read my last post. The victory of Kendall turning five years old lasted exactly one day. The morning after his birthday we were informed that the painful lump on his shin is indeed a tumor, that it is filled with leukemic cells, and that it is much more aggressive than the one they found in January. Many more tests have to be run, but they are already discussing chemotherapy in addition to the localized radiation. The donor cells were the only thing keeping his… Continue

Today my very special little friend Kendall turned five. What once seemed like a hopeless dream is now reality. Kendall was two when he fought the worst parts of his battle against JMML. We came so close to losing him so many times; our year in the trenches. It seemed like children were dying all around him. It was such a terrifying time. The fear was overwhelming, just as our love for him was overflowing. I remember his third birthday. I broke down and cried for what seemed like an eternity.… Continue
