CureSearch Advocates needed for June 22-23, 2009 Washington D.C. "Reach the Day" trip!! Please help us speak up for our cancer kids!!

We are looking ahead to CureSearch's June 22-23 trip to Washington D.C. We REALLY need to have ALL states represented and there are still a few that have no representation. This means that nobody goes to the Senators and Congressional leaders in these states to ask them to help us in our efforts to acquire more funding for childhood cancer research. We need you! If you live in any of the states listed below, please email me ( )and I will put you in contact with Kate Shafer who is the Director of Advocacy for CureSearch. She will explain the specifics to you. You can also read about the event and have some of your questions answered at: The trip will be quick (unless you choose to stay longer and enjoy D.C.) and rewarding for those who go.

For those of you who have never gone to D.C., I am telling you it is an awesome feeling. Those of us who have lost our children to cancer or have children who fought and are here but left with long term side effects, I urge you to go. It is a very empowering feeling going and being the voice for our heroic cancer kids, and they deserve more voices. I have been told over and over (from representatives) that funding isn't being given to childhood cancer because kids don't vote so it doesn't help a political leader to direct the funds there. As sick as that is, it's true. They have told me multiple times that it is vital that I keep coming back to D.C. to be the kids' voice since the kids can't do it. I am honored to do this, but I can only represent my home state of California. We need people from the states listed below to step up and be a team leader with us. The states that aren't listed below have a representative already, but we could use more. Everyone is welcome to come! If you are interested in going and your state is not listed below, please email me anyways. I promise you, it will feel so good to speak up for our cancer kids! It feels like we are fighting back at cancer which makes us less victimized. That feels good! Let's not take what cancer is doing to our kids lying down! Let's fight for their right together while meeting other amazing parents/advocates at the same time. Please consider joining us in D.C. in June! This will be my 5th trip to Washington D.C. in a year, and I look forward the the many more trips I will make to D.C. to speak up for our cancer kids. Let's honor our cancer heros together by being their voice in D.C.

The States where we need team leaders are:

North and South Dakota

New Hampshire

The date of the even is June 22-23. I will be flying in on June 21st and probably leave on June 24th. People going can leave after their appointments on June 23rd if they want to though. You just have to make sure to make your flight the latest of the day (around 6 or so if possible) so you don't have to cut your appointments short. Remember, that is why we are there.
I would encourage everyone to register at

Sandy, I went on the Curesearch site to get the dates for the event and when you click on the picture on the left--it says June 22-23. When I went to the info for 2009, there is no date listed. Is June 22-23 correct?

I want badly to be there in person for the first time. Last year, I helped gather footprints on a banner from kids at Seattle Children's Hospital to send to D.C. but there were just not enough available to make a big impact on the day I went. I am trying to figure out how I can make the airfare while I am working 7 days a week to pay my bills. I will be glad to help any way I can.

To all who are considering going to D.C. in June,
I spoke with Kate Shafer who is the Director of Adcocacy for CureSearch and she said to direct everyone to her that has questions about being an advocate. She said she has a team leader for all states except what is listed, BUT wants people to know anyone who can come to D.C. would be welcomed and appreciated. We need to let the representatives know there are several of us out there who want change in what is (or should I say is not) being done for childhood cancer. Also, if we have more people, we can visit more representatives. The more the better!! Please come if you are able to. Read about the event at:
Feel free to contact Kate for any questions about being an advocate. Her email is:
Thanks, Sandy Barker

Who is the rep. for West Virginia? I'm trying to come up with the money to go, but would also like to talk with WV rep if possible. I've never been to DC so is there somewhere to stay that all of us are trying to stay at together and do we meet up together at some point?

Thanks for all you do. I'm sure our angels our proud.

How does Virginia look as far as representation and could I be of assistance?
